Reviews :

“Hum Saath-Saath Hain is 99's biggest success story… Sooraj Barjatya has indeed made history, coming up with yet another hit after the blockbuster Hum Aapke Hain Koun. Even Mehboob Khan never repeated the success of Mother India, and neither did Ramesh Sippy replicate, let alone surpass Sholay's success. But Sooraj Barjatya did it with the back-to-back successes of Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! Now in Hum Saath-Saath Hain, he has a hat-trick of hits. Agreed, it hasn't matched the success of Hum Aapke Hain Koun, but it is still the biggest hit of the year. In an industry where success has turned out to be so hard to get, perhaps we need to learn to appreciate our success stories more. And like it or lump it, Hum Saath-Saath Hain has been quite successful, proving the contention that Sooraj Barjatya has his finger on the audience's pulse. As the veteran distributor on the Eastern circuit, Lala Damani, puts it, "No one understands the audience's tastes better than Sooraj Barjatya does. He has already provided himself as the biggest and most successful Indian director ever". Need we say more?”
- NP Yadav , Screen (December 17, 1999)

“The mother of all mainstream films tells us we are all together, bound by sanskar, parampara, dharma, shastra, karma, prem, shraddha... a grand fantasy that fills the atrophied, atomised turn-of-the century heart with glee.… Strong emotions, handled with elegance and verve with all the key players pitching in with powerful performances. Hum Saath-Saath Hain is truly a collaborative effort, where all the performers effortlessly blend into a seamless whole to create an exhilarating picture of familiar bliss and bonding."
- Nikhat Kazmi, The Sunday Times (November 7, 1999)

“Sooraj Barjatya is setting a new record with each film, and showing no signs of fraying. Having rewritten the blood-and-gore formula that ruled Bollywood with Maine Pyar Kiya in the sunset year of the 80's, Sooraj Barjatya has made yet another blockbuster - and the passing year's only real hit - to cap a crowded decade that saw the hugely successful Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! bring candyfloss back to Bollywood. And as with HAHK!, which made Hindi film-watching a family activity once more, he had only his own records to break with Hum Saath-Saath Hain. At last count, Hindi cinema's first co-branded film had raked in Rs.2.5 crore (its projected to notch up a profit of Rs.30 crore in the coming year) and made it to the US Top Ten, which no other Bollywood property has ever managed to do.
Will HSSH sink the record of HAHK? Well, that the new year of the new century will tell. What no one will dispute, though, is that the notoriously self-effacing (an attribute he says he shares with Mani Ratnam) Barjatya is Bollywood's Big B of the '90s.”
- Hindustan Times (December 26, 1999)
“Hum Saath-Saath Hain holds your attention with its songs, the colours, the costumes, the movement - no time to think…. Everyone has given a commendable performance. Worth noting are performances from Reema, Mohnish, Saif, Salman... and surprise, surprise- Sonali who has done wonders in a miniscule role of a shy, but mature Preeti. Whether you agree or not with the film and its maker, at least you know you have not wasted your time and sensibility with Hum Saath-Saath Hain.”
- Free Press Journal (November 12, 1999)

Apparently a modern day retelling of the Ramayana, HSSH has all the necessary ingredients: misled stepmum, obedient older son, marching orders, protest from younger son, and, above all, a happy ending.
- The Sunday Times of India (October 17, 1999)

Of all the young, happening Bollywood directors, which one would remake the Ramayana? No prizes for guessing - Sooraj Barjatya of course. Hum Saath-Saath Hain (HSSH) is a family love fest in the tradition of Hum Aapke Hain Koun (HAHK), only this one has more of a plot and a villain thrown in for once.
