Reena Kapoor goes steady on the small screen
REENA KAPOOR tells JYOTHI VENKATESH that she prefers to act in just one daily soap at a time
Why are you working in only one serial- ‘Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki’ at a time when other actresses do two to three shows at the same time?
I am happy acting in just one serial at a time because I do not have to tax myself working in three or four serials at the same time. I am chilled and hence am able to focus totally on my show.

What attracted you to the show when ‘Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki’ was offered to you?
The biggest attraction was the Rajshri banner, coming on the small screen with a show for Sahara One. With a banner like Rajshri Productions at the helm of affairs, you know for sure that they will do justice to the show as well as your role and abstain from showing vulgarity, which has become the norm these days even on TV. It was the perfect win-win situation as far as I am concerned and I could not have possibly said no to them when they approached me with the offer.

Tell us something about your role in ‘Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki’.
I play a positive role. I essay the role of Pari who wins over the hearts of every one in the household. The character does not howl like other characters in soaps and in moments of sadness, she takes the support of Ramayan. The best thing about the serial is that luckily I was not given any brief that I should be like Bhagyashree of ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’.

How tough was it for you as an actress when the serial took a leap?
It was not at all difficult because when the show took a leap; my character also underwent a lot of changes. It was not a sudden change and hence I could come to grips with the change in the nuances of the characterization with effortless ease.

Why are you known as the Annu Kapoor of soaps?
That is because I am rock steady in ‘Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki’ like Annu Kapoor has been in the show Antakshari whereas my leading men come and go. Ankur was playing the role of Rohit earlier till he was replaced by Arjun. Kashif then replaced Arjun. After Kashif came Ankur and then Aamir Ali replaced Ankur.

In what way has marriage made any difference to you career-wise?
Mine was an arranged marriage. My husband is into software. If I am shooting so comfortably, it's thanks to my husband who is not only considerate but also understanding.

After ‘Dhoondthe Reh Jaaoge’ in which your co-stars were Amar Upadhyay and Antara Mali, why have you not acted in any film?
I do not want to appear in films in blink and go kind of roles. Besides ‘Dhoondthe Reh Jaaoge’, I have also acted in films like ‘Kya Kehna’ and ‘Hero Hindustani’. Right now, I do not have any other project other than ‘Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki’ on my hands. Neither have I approached any producer nor has any producer approached me with an offer to cast me in his film.

Are you inclined to take up other serials besides ‘Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki’?
I do not mind taking up an offer to do a weekly serial but am not at all inclined to take up yet another daily because I want to concentrate on one daily serial at a time to ensure that I am not worn out as an actress.

Can you tell us about the roles you had played in ‘Kya Kehna’ and ‘Hero Hindustani’?
In Kya Kehna, I played Preity Zinta's best friend while in Hero Hindustani, I played the role of Arshad Warsi's sister. People ask me why I am not waiting to do bigger roles in bigger banners but the thing is that I myself would not be comfortable to get into the skin of characters, which need me to project glamour.

What kind of roles do you prefer to do in films?
I would like to act in films like Iqbal, Dor, etc. where you need to etch out characters in flesh and blood and not just glamorous heroines. I am a die-hard fan of Nagesh Kukunoor.

Is it true that you were offered a Bhojpuri film with Ravi Kissen as your leading man?
Yes. I had even allotted 25 days for a Bhojpuri film in which Ravi Kissen was to be my leading man but the project did not materialise because after wasting my dates they wanted me to allot them another chunk of dates. In the process, I could get to spend quality time with my husband.

Do you regret having acted in any serial till now?
I regret having acted in the serial Devi because looking back I feel that it was a stupid serial since the role did not materialise as briefed. I shot for the serial for seven months. By that time, I realized that it was a grave mistake on my part to have taken up the offer to act in that serial.

How would you describe yourself as an actress?
Without sounding clichéd, I would like to state that I am not a very good actress. Because I can be at my best as an actress only if I am given subdued characters that go with what I am like Pari in ‘Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki’. I have to work on boisterous and loud characters. I feel that I have to diversify as an actress by taking up various kinds of roles and set out to prove my versatility.
